A recent joint report released in Beijing highlights a significant shift in the business and technological dynamics between China and Germany. The study, presented at the China-Germany (China-Europe) Hidden Champions Forum 2026 in Beijing’s Shunyi district, indicates a mutual exchange of expertise and innovation between the two nations, marking a departure from the traditional one-way flow from Germany to China.
The forum, which gathered over 400 executives and business representatives from both Europe and China, served as a platform to discuss and enhance bilateral cooperation. The report reveals that a considerable number of European companies are looking to expand their footprint in China. Specifically, 38 percent of the surveyed European firms expressed intentions to boost their research and development investments in the country. Additionally, 40 percent are planning to grant their Chinese branches more autonomy from their German headquarters.
In parallel, China’s major electric vehicle manufacturers, including Li Auto and NIO, are making strategic moves into Germany by establishing research and design centers there. This development underscores the increasing two-way technological collaboration between the two countries, reflecting a reciprocal engagement that benefits both sides.
The forum also witnessed the launch of a public service station aimed at assisting businesses in overcoming technical trade barriers. Another highlight was the introduction of a partnership initiative designed to invite German and European companies to engage actively in the economic and technological cooperation zone in Shunyi, Beijing.
According to Tang Wenhong, Beijing is committed to further fostering collaboration between Chinese and German enterprises. The city aims to attract more innovative companies, thereby reinforcing its status as an international hub for science and technology.
