China has taken a significant leap forward in its space endeavors with the successful debut flight of the Long March 12B carrier rocket. The launch, conducted from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, culminated in the successful deployment of the 10th batch of Spacesail Constellation communication satellites into their designated orbit, underscoring China’s advancements in space technology.

Standing at approximately 72 meters, the Long March 12B is now the most potent single-body rocket in China’s arsenal. The two-stage vehicle boasts 10 engines fueled by liquid oxygen and kerosene, collectively generating a liftoff thrust of about 800 metric tons. This powerful configuration allows the rocket to transport payloads exceeding 20 tons into low-Earth orbit.

The development journey of the Long March 12B commenced in September 2024. Engineers integrated a range of cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing both performance and efficiency. These innovations include high-performance propulsion systems, lightweight structural components, optimized fuel management, and autonomous flight-control software capable of addressing in-flight anomalies. Future tests are already on the horizon, targeting the recovery and potential reuse of the rocket’s first-stage booster. Successful recovery tests could pave the way for a reusable version of the Long March 12B in the years to come.

This mission also plays a pivotal role in expanding the Spacesail Constellation, a satellite network in low-Earth orbit designed to deliver high-speed global broadband internet. With over 160 satellites now deployed, the project aims to launch more than 10,000 satellites by the year 2030, furthering China’s ambitions to enhance global satellite internet access.

The recent launch not only marks a milestone in China’s commercial space sector but also reinforces the nation’s commitment to broadening its satellite internet coverage worldwide. As the country continues to make strides in space technology, it positions itself as a formidable player in the global space race.
