During a recent visit to Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi faced calls from Nordic leaders to leverage his nation’s influence to facilitate the end of Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a meeting held in Oslo, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre urged China to play a constructive role in achieving a ceasefire and fostering meaningful peace talks. He also voiced concerns over China’s sustained economic relations with Russia, especially through the purchase of energy resources.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide echoed this sentiment, indicating that the Nordic countries had collectively encouraged China to push Russia toward negotiations that are free of any preconditions. The diplomatic discussions were not confined to the issue of Ukraine; they also encompassed topics such as trade, climate cooperation, renewable energy, and Arctic affairs.
Norwegian officials emphasized the importance of collaboration with China on areas where mutual interests align but did not shy away from raising critical issues. Among these were national security, cybersecurity, and human rights concerns, particularly in regions like Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong. Additionally, Norway expressed apprehension about China’s expanding influence in the Arctic, a region of strategic importance.
Wang Yi’s five-day tour of the Nordic countries highlighted China’s growing engagement with the region amid ongoing geopolitical tensions that are reshaping international diplomatic relations. This visit reflects China’s strategic interest in Nordic affairs and its potential role in addressing global challenges, including the crisis in Ukraine.
