Jingye Demands £1bn Payout Post-Nationalisation of British Steel by UK.

Jingye, a Chinese steel production company, has launched formal legal proceedings against the UK government, seeking compensation after British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant was nationalized. The company is leveraging a UK–China bilateral investment treaty for its claim, following unsuccessful negotiations over financial settlement terms. Industry insiders suggest the compensation could potentially surpass £1 billion.

The conflict arises from the UK government’s decision to assume control of British Steel, citing national security concerns and the necessity of maintaining domestic steel production capabilities. This move was a response to fears of the plant’s possible closure and the subsequent loss of numerous jobs. Jingye had taken ownership of British Steel in 2020 and had contemplated shutting down the operations due to financial constraints and an oversaturated global steel market. However, the UK’s intervention prevented this closure by transferring control of the assets to the state.

The Chinese company contends that it deserves compensation for the losses and investments it has incurred since acquiring the plant. The UK government, on the other hand, argues that its actions were crucial to safeguarding strategic industrial capacity and jobs. If no agreement is reached during the treaty’s consultation phase, the dispute is likely to proceed to international arbitration. Experts caution that this case could exacerbate tensions in UK–China economic relations.

At the same time, the UK is reassessing its broader steel industry policy, including the regulation of imports and potential restructuring of the domestic sector. These evaluations are part of preparations for long-term shifts in production and ownership.
