Amid escalating military pressure from China, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the critical need for ongoing U.S. arms sales to bolster Taiwan’s defensive capabilities. In light of the growing threats, Yui highlighted Taiwan’s proactive approach in boosting its defense expenditures and its unwavering commitment to strengthening its response to potential security challenges. He emphasized that while external support is vital, Taiwan must focus on self-reliance by investing in its own defense infrastructure.
The U.S. government is currently reviewing a proposed $14 billion weapons package intended for Taiwan, a move that has garnered widespread backing from U.S. lawmakers. These legislators perceive Taiwan’s defense requirements as increasingly urgent due to the heightened military activities by China in the region. These activities include frequent military drills, the deployment of warships, and increased aircraft operations in close proximity to Taiwan, all of which Yui mentioned as a basis for justifying the scale of military support needed.
Yui articulated that the level of military aid should correspond with the threat’s magnitude, reiterating Taiwan’s aim to safeguard its security and democratic institutions through defensive strategies.
