In a significant appeal to reshape global dynamics, Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged collaborative efforts to construct a fair and orderly multipolar world. Addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus Meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on September 1, Xi advocated for more equitable global governance, emphasizing the need for greater representation and influence for Global South countries in international affairs. He underscored that the ascendance of the Global South is catalyzing substantial shifts in the international power structure, marking an irreversible trend toward a multipolar world.
Xi Jinping articulated that sovereign equality, mutual respect, and multilateralism should form the cornerstone of international relations. He called for all nations, regardless of their size, power, or wealth, to enjoy equal rights, opportunities, and rules. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of major powers adhering to international norms and upholding the rule of law. Xi’s vision includes reinforcing the role of the United Nations and advocating for broader participation in addressing global issues.
Highlighting the necessity for development and open cooperation, Xi urged countries to reduce disparities in digital and artificial intelligence sectors, ensuring technological advancements benefit a wider range of nations. His remarks were an extension of the Global Governance Initiative he proposed at the previous SCO Plus Meeting in Tianjin, which China claims has garnered support from various countries and international organizations over the past year.
Xi also pointed to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s 25-year history as a testament to successful collaboration among nations with diverse political systems, cultures, and development levels. He called for the strengthening of SCO Plus partnerships and enhanced cooperation across Asia and Europe, particularly through high-quality Belt and Road initiatives. By promoting these partnerships, Xi envisions a more interconnected and cooperative global community.
