In a significant vehicle recall effort, Tesla and eight other automakers are set to address safety concerns involving around 4.3 million vehicles in China. The core issue involves the potential difficulty in locating or operating concealed or emergency door-release handles during accidents or electrical failures. Tesla vehicles represent the largest portion of this recall, with approximately 2.98 million of its Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X cars, both imported and manufactured in China, needing attention. The recall process is slated to commence on September 25.

To resolve these safety issues, the affected vehicles may undergo a variety of modifications. These solutions could range from the addition of warning labels and improved markings to over-the-air software updates designed to enhance door-release handle visibility and operability. The concerns stem from the potential difficulty occupants might face in identifying and using these emergency handles after a severe collision, which could hinder escape efforts or prevent rescuers from gaining quick access to the vehicle interior.

Among other automakers facing significant recalls are Xiaomi, with approximately 390,000 vehicles, Leapmotor, recalling 371,000 vehicles, and Xpeng, which has 264,000 vehicles involved. These recalls highlight a broader industry challenge as manufacturers grapple with evolving safety standards and technological complexities in modern vehicles.

The Chinese government has been proactive in tightening vehicle safety regulations, reflecting an increased emphasis on passenger safety during emergencies. As part of these efforts, China has announced plans to prohibit the use of concealed door handles starting in 2027. This regulatory shift underscores the importance of clear and accessible safety mechanisms in vehicles, particularly in situations where rapid egress is critical.
