The United States has unveiled a new set of tariffs, aiming to impose levies of up to 100% on imports of certain drones and their components. This move, driven by national security concerns, seeks to lessen the country’s reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. Targeted in this policy are unmanned aircraft systems, specifically larger drones that weigh over 25 kilograms and those equipped with capabilities relevant to national security, such as thermal imaging cameras and docking stations. These will incur a 100% tariff, whereas smaller drones are slated for a 25% tariff.
The new tariffs will also extend to drones and components imported from several key trading partners. Goods from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff. Meanwhile, imports from the United Kingdom will be subject to a 10% tariff, provided that the hardware, software, and technology originate from either the listed countries or the United States. The implementation of most of these tariffs is scheduled for September 3.
The White House has justified these measures as a strategic effort to bolster the US defense and industrial sectors. By encouraging domestic drone manufacturing, the government aims to create jobs within the United States and reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers. This is particularly pertinent given China’s current dominance in the global drone market. The Shenzhen-based company DJI, for instance, holds a substantial share of the US commercial drone market and has previously faced restrictions in the US due to security concerns.
US officials have raised alarms about the potential risks associated with foreign-manufactured drones, including threats related to surveillance, sensitive data collection, and possible attacks. The Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production as a means to mitigate such risks. The announcement of these tariffs comes at a time of ongoing trade and technology tensions between Washington and Beijing. In response, China has imposed its own restrictions on drone exports to the US and has taken action against several American companies.
