Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has embarked on a five-day state visit to Taiwan, a move aimed at bolstering diplomatic ties and exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation between the two nations. The visit, which underscores a long-standing relationship since the re-establishment of diplomatic ties in 2007, involves key discussions with Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te and other senior officials on shared interests and potential collaborations.
During his stay, Prime Minister Pierre will be honored with a military ceremony hosted by President Lai, while Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung will facilitate a formal banquet in his honor. The visit also includes a series of engagements aimed at fostering mutual understanding and collaboration. Pierre’s itinerary features visits to significant Taiwanese landmarks such as Cathay General Hospital, Taipei 101, and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Museum of Innovation in Hsinchu.
Accompanying Prime Minister Pierre on this diplomatic mission are notable figures from Saint Lucia, including Attorney General Leslie Mondesir, Senator Allison A Jean, and Saint Lucia Development Bank Chairman Daryl Raymond. Their presence signals the importance of this diplomatic engagement and the potential for developing cooperative ventures in various sectors.
This visit marks Prime Minister Pierre’s fourth trip to Taiwan since assuming office in 2021, highlighting the ongoing commitment between Saint Lucia and Taiwan to maintain strong bilateral relations. These interactions come in the context of Saint Lucia’s diplomatic history with Taiwan, which dates back to 1984. Although diplomatic ties were temporarily severed in 1997 when Saint Lucia shifted recognition to Beijing, they were restored in 2007, reaffirming Saint Lucia’s stance as one of the countries that officially recognize Taiwan over the People’s Republic of China.
The delegation’s visit is anticipated to reinforce diplomatic engagement and open up new opportunities for cooperation in areas of mutual interest, reflecting both nations’ desires to deepen their collaborative efforts in the international arena.
