Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has strongly reiterated the island’s sovereignty in response to criticism from China following President Lai Ching-te’s National Day speech. The Chinese government accused President Lai of fostering tensions across the Taiwan Strait and jeopardizing regional peace.

In its statement, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that Taiwan and China are independent entities and that Taiwan’s future should be decided solely by its 23 million residents, rejecting any interference from Beijing in its domestic affairs. The ministry urged China to respect the political differences between the two sides, including Taiwan’s democratic system, and called on Beijing to cease actions that could heighten tensions or attempt to alter the current status quo through force.

Taiwan also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the broader Indo-Pacific region. The ministry highlighted Taiwan’s dedication to strengthening cooperation with democratic partners around the world to safeguard its sovereignty and support its long-term growth.

This reaffirmation comes amid ongoing cross-strait tensions, with China viewing Taiwan as a breakaway province, while Taiwan views itself as a sovereign state. The tension between the two has been a significant regional issue, with international implications due to the involvement of global powers in the Indo-Pacific region.

Taiwan’s stance underscores its resolve to preserve its autonomy and democratic values, even as it navigates complex geopolitical dynamics. The ministry’s response serves as a reminder of Taiwan’s determination to chart its own path and engage with the international community on its terms.
