IMF Boosts Taiwan’s 2026 GDP Growth Forecast to 10.7% Amid AI Demand

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has significantly revised its forecast for Taiwan’s economic growth in 2026, projecting a robust 10.7% expansion. This marks a substantial increase from the IMF’s previous estimate of 5.2% made in April. Taiwan is now poised to be one of the fastest-growing economies globally, largely driven by surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technology and computing hardware.

According to the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook, Taiwan is expected to achieve the second-highest economic growth rate worldwide in 2026, trailing only Guyana, which is forecast to grow by 22.3%. South Sudan follows closely with an anticipated growth of 10.5%. Taiwan’s projected growth also outpaces other major Asian economies, with Singapore expected to expand by 5% and China by 4.5% during the same period.

The IMF attributes Taiwan’s optimistic economic outlook to its critical role in the global technology supply chain, especially in AI-related computing hardware. Together with South Korea, Taiwan accounts for approximately 62% of global net trade in this sector, benefiting from the increasing demand for advanced semiconductors and computing equipment.

In 2025, Taiwan’s economy grew by 8.8%, with the IMF predicting a moderation to 4.3% growth in 2027 as economic conditions evolve. The Fund has also revised its inflation outlook for Taiwan, forecasting a 2% rise in consumer prices in 2026, up from the earlier estimate of 1.5%. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate is projected to remain stable at 3.4% through both 2026 and 2027.

On a global scale, the IMF forecasts an economic growth rate of 3.1% in 2026, with an improvement to 3.4% in 2027. The Fund emphasizes that technological investment and countries’ ability to adapt to economic disruptions are contributing to growth despite ongoing geopolitical tensions and energy market uncertainties.
