Taiwan’s Office in Papua New Guinea Defies Closure Order, Continues Operations

by admin477351

Taiwan’s representative office in Papua New Guinea remains operational despite the Papua New Guinea government’s directive to shut it down, according to Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry. This development follows an announcement made in July by Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, who stated that the government had ordered the closure of the office.

Taiwan, which was not consulted prior to this decision, has lodged a formal protest. Chiu Chen-yu, Taiwan’s representative in Papua New Guinea, continues to engage in regular communication with officials from the country’s Department of Foreign Affairs, and no significant disruptions to operations have been reported.

The situation underscores a delicate diplomatic posture as Taiwan seeks to maintain its presence in the region. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has expressed its intention to prepare for various potential outcomes and is actively pursuing dialogue with Papua New Guinea. The Ministry is also seeking to garner international support to facilitate discussions aimed at keeping the representative office open.

Taiwan’s approach reflects broader efforts to secure its international standing amid challenges to its diplomatic relations. The ongoing negotiations highlight the complexities of maintaining international offices in the face of geopolitical shifts.
