Taiwan’s T-Dome Missile Specs Boost Defense Industry and Economic Prospects

The National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) in Taiwan has unveiled the technical details of the Chiang Kung missile, a high-altitude interceptor that is set to be a significant component of the nation’s envisioned “T-Dome” air defense network. This missile, also referred to as Tien Chien IV, aims to counter ballistic missiles at altitudes reaching up to 70 kilometers. It features a vertical launch system based on the ground and utilizes a two-stage solid-propellant rocket, with vectored thrust capabilities to enhance maneuverability at elevated altitudes.

The NCSIST highlights that the missile’s radar system is capable of identifying various target types and can engage multiple tactical ballistic missiles, even while counteracting electronic warfare measures. In addition, the system is equipped with a mobile active electronically scanned array radar, which is designed to effectively operate in conditions where electromagnetic interference and GPS jamming are present.

Currently, Taiwan lacks a high-altitude interception capability, and the introduction of the Chiang Kung is expected to fill this gap, working alongside existing air-defense mechanisms within the proposed T-Dome network. The T-Dome initiative represents a strategic effort to bolster Taiwan’s defensive posture against potential aerial threats.

Despite its potential benefits, the Chiang Kung program is experiencing financial hurdles. It was noticeably absent from Taiwan’s special defense budget, compelling the Ministry of National Defense to pursue funding through a supplementary budget. There are concerns among officials that any delays in securing the necessary funds could disrupt the acquisition timeline and impede the broader development of the T-Dome network.
