During a recent state visit to Taiwan, Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip Pierre underscored his nation’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Taiwan, focusing on key areas such as education, agriculture, renewable energy, and climate change. The prime minister’s five-day visit included discussions with Taiwanese President William Lai in Taipei, where both leaders emphasized the importance of deepening their longstanding bilateral relationship.

Prime Minister Pierre highlighted shared challenges between Saint Lucia and Taiwan, particularly regarding climate change. He noted the impact of an ongoing drought in Saint Lucia, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon, stressing the need for improved water management and rainwater harvesting systems. Addressing these environmental challenges, as well as modernizing agriculture and developing renewable energy resources, were identified as priorities for Saint Lucia.

Education was a central theme of the discussions. Pierre expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s support through scholarship programs, which have enabled over 400 young Saint Lucians to pursue higher education. He expressed interest in expanding these opportunities and developing a modern cultural and creative arts center. Additionally, he encouraged increased academic and professional exchanges, offering opportunities for Saint Lucian doctors, researchers, and students to study in Taiwan.

President Lai welcomed the commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, highlighting the growing collaboration between government and private sectors in both countries. He announced that the Taiwan External Trade Development Council would host the 19th Taiwan-Saint Lucia trade exhibition in Saint Lucia next month, with participation from over 70 local and Taiwanese companies. This event aims to bolster commercial partnerships and business connections.

The Taiwanese president also acknowledged Saint Lucia’s support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, including its push for full membership in the United Nations. Both leaders reiterated the importance of continued cooperation in tackling global challenges, such as climate change and public health.

The discussions between Pierre and Lai signal a mutual intention to expand the partnership between Saint Lucia and Taiwan through initiatives in education, trade, sustainable development, and cultural exchanges.
