The US House of Representatives has recently approved an appropriations bill for the coming fiscal year that earmarks US$500 million in Foreign Military Financing for Taiwan. This bill, passed by a margin of 217 to 209 votes, also includes measures to support Taiwan’s involvement in international organizations.
With a total allocation of US$47.32 billion in discretionary funding, the bill represents a reduction from the current fiscal year’s budget, aligning with the administration’s revised spending priorities. Despite the overall decrease, the legislation continues to uphold support for critical American allies, such as Taiwan, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt, while addressing strategic challenges posed by nations like China and Iran.
In an effort to bolster defense support for Taiwan, the bill mandates the US Secretary of State, in collaboration with the Defense Secretary, to expedite the provision of defense equipment and services to the island. Furthermore, at least US$4 million has been designated for the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, which is facilitated through the American Institute in Taiwan.
Additionally, the bill includes a clause that restricts the use of funds for creating or displaying maps that inaccurately depict Taiwan’s territorial boundaries or its political system. This measure underscores the importance placed on accurately representing Taiwan’s status in official materials.
Before becoming law, the bill still requires approval from the US Senate. Once it passes the Senate, it will be presented to the president for final endorsement.
