TSMC to Boost Economy with New High-Tech Plant in Kaohsiung

by admin477351

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) is set to enhance its semiconductor testing and validation capabilities with the development of a new site at the Baipu Industrial Park in Kaohsiung. This initiative aims to accelerate the testing and validation processes for semiconductor materials and equipment. The project is a collaborative effort with Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Kaohsiung City Government. According to TSMC Vice President Jun He, the new facility is expected to boost validation efficiency by 25 to 50 percent.

The 3-hectare facility will be equipped with two buildings featuring modular designs adaptable to future semiconductor technology advancements. It will house small clean rooms and laboratories dedicated to research, testing, and the joint development of advanced packaging technologies, materials, and equipment. This expansion is poised to serve as a training ground for specialists in advanced packaging and aims to strengthen connections between Taiwanese suppliers and the global semiconductor supply chain.

Driven by the surge in demand for advanced packaging fueled by the growth of artificial intelligence, TSMC anticipates its chip-on-wafer-on-substrate advanced packaging capacity to expand at an annual rate exceeding 80 percent through the next year, with robust demand projected to persist until 2029. This development underscores the broader growth trajectory of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, which is forecasted to generate nearly $300 billion in revenue this year—a more than 40 percent increase over the previous year.

As the demand for AI continues to rise, industry leaders see burgeoning opportunities in areas such as memory, high-bandwidth technologies, advanced packaging, and silicon photonics. However, they also acknowledge ongoing challenges in securing reliable energy supplies, cultivating a skilled workforce, and maintaining cybersecurity. These factors are critical as the industry strives to keep pace with technological advancements and global market demands.
