A significant improvement in transportation has arrived in Taipei with the opening of the Shengji Tunnel, linking Zhongxiao East Road to the National Biotechnology Research Park in the Nangang District. This NT$1.878 billion infrastructure project is expected to significantly reduce travel times and alleviate traffic congestion in the area.
The newly inaugurated tunnel stretches 824 meters, including a 716-meter tunnel section, and is strategically designed to streamline traffic flow on Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road. It provides a quicker connection between Taipei’s Nangang District and Sijhih District in New Taipei City. During peak hours, it is anticipated that travel times between the research park and Nangang Station will drop from the usual 15–20 minutes to under 10 minutes.
Besides enhancing commuting efficiency, the Shengji Tunnel also serves as a vital alternative route during emergencies, such as flooding, that may disrupt Academia Road. Additionally, the infrastructure includes a separate pathway, ensuring safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists.
The National Biotechnology Research Park, operational since 2018, is a cornerstone of biomedical research and biotechnology activities in Nangang. It has attracted over 2,600 researchers and professionals, contributing to the sector’s growth in the area. The new tunnel is expected to further support this burgeoning hub by improving accessibility and connectivity.
